What to Expect in Your First Reformer Pilates Class

What to Expect in Your First Reformer Pilates Class

Almost everyone who walks into a reformer studio for the first time is quietly worried about the same thing: that they will be the only person who does not know what they are doing. Here is exactly what happens in that first hour, so that you can stop wondering.

Before you arrive

We will have asked you a few questions already — injuries, surgeries, whether you are pregnant or recently postpartum, and what else you do in a week. This is not a formality. It changes which springs we put you on and which exercises we skip, and it is the difference between a first session that works and one that leaves you sore in the wrong places.

Come about ten minutes early. You will need that time to find the studio, leave your things in a locker and actually look at the machine before you are asked to lie on it.

What to wear and bring

Fitted activewear. Not loose shorts or a baggy t-shirt — the instructor needs to see how your hips, spine and knees are moving, and loose fabric hides exactly the things that need correcting. Leggings and a fitted top are ideal.

Grip socks are the one thing you must bring. The reformer carriage and footbar are smooth, and bare feet or ordinary socks slide. Most studios sell them if you forget, and they last years.

Leave everything else at home. Mats, props, rings, bands and water are already at the studio.

The first ten minutes on the machine

You will not launch straight into a class. Your instructor will walk you around the reformer and name the parts, because everything said for the next hour refers to them:

You will then do a few slow repetitions of footwork — pushing the carriage away and letting it come back — until the movement stops feeling strange. This is the whole skill of the reformer in miniature: control on the way out, and more control on the way back.

A counterintuitive thing about the springs

Newcomers assume more springs means harder. Often it is the opposite. On many exercises the springs support you, so a lighter setting demands far more from your own body. If your instructor takes a spring off, you have not been given an easier round.

The reformer is not a weights machine that happens to slide. The resistance is there to teach you control, not to be beaten.

What the hour actually feels like

Slower than you expect, and harder than it looks. There is very little jumping around and no music driving a tempo. What there is instead is a lot of small, precise movement, a lot of breathing at specific moments, and an instructor correcting the angle of your pelvis while you are fairly sure you were already doing it right.

You will be corrected often in your first class. That is the service you are paying for. In a group of this size nobody spends an hour repeating a movement incorrectly, which is exactly what happens on a gym floor.

Expect to shake. Muscles you did not know you had will fatigue in a way that feels like trembling rather than burning. This is normal and it settles within two or three sessions.

Afterwards

Most people feel taller and slightly looser walking out, then notice their deep abdominals and inner thighs the following day. Soreness after a first reformer class is usually mild and shows up in places that surprise people.

If something hurt sharply during the session rather than felt hard, say so at the time. Sharp is information; hard is just Tuesday.

How soon to come back

Twice in the first week if you can, because the second session is when the machine stops being unfamiliar and you start actually training rather than learning. Twice a week is where most people settle and where change reliably shows.

And if you are completely new to exercise, or returning after an injury or a pregnancy, a private session or two before joining a group is the fastest route in. It is not the cautious option — it is the efficient one.

Try it on the machine

Reading about the reformer only goes so far. Come in for a trial session and we will show you what the springs actually feel like.
